Johann Nepomuk Berger (physician)
Johann Nepomuk Berger (born July 22, 1781 in St. Johann in Tirol , † April 11, 1847 in Munich ) was an Austrian doctor .
Life
Berger studied medicine at the Leopold-Franzens University Innsbruck from 1801 , opened a practice in St. Johann in Tyrol in 1805 and received his doctorate in 1806 .
He became the first district vaccinator in Innsbruck and, against great opposition, introduced the cowpox vaccination there. After a brief activity as a military doctor in the Bavarian army, he became a district court doctor in Wolfratshausen in 1809 . In 1817 he was appointed professor at the new midwifery school in Munich, of which he became director in 1826. Also in 1817 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1831 he became an associate professor for obstetrics at the medical faculty of the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . From 1833 he was also director of the local birthing center. He was a long-time member of the medical committee and a doctor at the municipal children's home in Munich.
Berger took measures to improve hygiene in order to reduce infections during births. This enabled him to reduce maternal mortality.
