Johann Nicolaus Funck

Johann Nicolaus Funck or Johannis Nocolaus Funccius (born March 29, 1693 in Marburg , † December 26, 1777 in Rinteln ) was a German philologist and university professor in Rinteln.

Life

Funck was born as the son of the lawyer and city commissioner of Marburg, Sebastian Funck, and his wife, Sybille Catharine, nee. Lynkers, born in Marburg. There he attended school and from 1708 also the university , where he studied theology , philosophy and history in particular the Latin language and literature in addition to the beautiful sciences . His early mastery of these allowed him to give private lessons himself, which, in addition to his writing activities, earned him his first position as tutor of the son of a Marburg law professor in 1719, before he took the position of a third teacher at the Marburg pedagogy in 1723 . In 1729 he became a full professor of eloquence, history and politics at Rinteln University . After the death of Johann Kahler , the university gave him the university librarianship in 1730 and from 1741 also the function of the Ephorus of the Rinteln university scholarship holders . Funck provided these offices with caution and reliability up to his old age of 85. From 1740 to 1750 Funck was Rector Magnificus of the university.

From 1727 Funck was married to Catharine Elisabeth, b. Koehler, widow of the Hessisch-Kassel captain lieutenant Nicolaus Heinrich Cancrius. The marriage resulted in two daughters, born in 1729 and 1735, and a son, born in 1733, Hermann Nikolaus, who was professor of law in Herborn in 1760 and in Steinfurt in 1763 , before being appointed court judge and councilor of the pledged imperial county of Bentheim in 1774 by King George III of England was used.

A cousin of the same name, Johann Nicolaus Funck (born November 26, 1715 in Kassel , † April 2, 1758 in Marburg ), who had studied in Rinteln, was rector of the reformed school there from 1740 and professor at the Marburg pedagogy from 1750.
