from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Kahler , also Johannes Kahler , Johannis Calerus (born January 18, 1649 in Wollmar ; † May 17, 1729 in Pyrmont ) was a German mathematician and Lutheran theologian and university professor in Rinteln .

Life

Johann Kahler was born as the son of the farmer Johann Hermann Kahler (* 1611 in Wollmar; † 1704 ibid.) And his wife Catharina Johanna Wacker (* Münchhausen), who also acted as judge. He first attended the village school there, received additional private lessons in Fronhausen and finally attended the Latin schools in Battenberg and Münchhausen .

From around 1660 he attended the Pedagogy of Marburg and from 1664 the University of Marburg . His formative teachers were Abraham Boots (born September 27, 1628 in Bremen; † October 11, 1673 in Marburg) in metaphysics, Johannes Magirus (born November 27, 1615 in Frankfurt / Oder; † February 11, 1697 in Marburg) in mathematics , Cyriakus Lentulus (also Lentz; * 1609 in Elbingen / Prussia; † September 27, 1678 in Marburg) in poetics, Greek, as well as church history and by Johann Engelhard Steuber the Elder (* June 11, 1618 in Gießen; † February 26 1683 in Marburg) he received his theological tools.

In April 1668 he moved to the University of Gießen where Kilian Rudrauff (* July 17, 1627 in Schotten; † September 15, 1690 in Gießen) in logic and metaphysics, Peter Haberkorn in theology, Philipp Ludwig Hanneken in rhetoric and Hebrew, as well as Michael Siricus (* December 2, 1628 in Lübeck, † August 24, 1685 in Güstrow) and Johann Nikolaus Misler in theology and Hebrew language were among his teachers. On June 29, 1670 he acquired the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophy in Giessen and then taught as a private lecturer.

As an academic tutor he supervised a young Count of Gorizia and four Swedish noblemen and gave philosophical lectures. In these he was one of the first to represent the positions of Cartesian philosophy at a German university in the face of astute criticism of the foundations of the previous school philosophy. Among his initially numerous opponents, the Giessen professor of theology, Peter Haberkorn, was the most resolute, while others were increasingly open-minded.

On May 3, 1677, Kahler became an associate professor for metaphysics and on December 1 of the same year he received the chair of logic at the University of Rinteln . On February 26, 1678 he was also a full professor of mathematics and on January 4, 1683 for theology . After receiving his doctorate there on September 20, 1683 theol. After receiving his doctorate , he was appointed Primarius (1st professor) for theology and honorary university librarian in 1697 . On May 17, 1729 he died as Rector Maginificus during a stay on his estate in Pyrmont, where he was also buried.

Johann Kahler was an outstanding personality at the university in the times after the Thirty Years' War . He taught in Rinteln for more than 52 years, was known, among other things, for his phenomenal memory and lived in the corner house at Klosterstrasse 31. The "Kahlergasse" in Rinteln still reminds of him today.
