Johann Otto Donner

Johann Otto Donner (born October 27, 1808 in Altona ; † February 16, 1873 there ) was a rear admiral in the Prussian Navy .

Danish, British and Merchant Navy

Born in Schleswig-Holstein , which was under the Danish government, Donner joined the Danish Navy as a midshipman in 1822 . In 1827 he was promoted to second lieutenant. From 1829 to 1831 he served as a volunteer lieutenant at sea in the British Royal Navy . From 1831 to 1840 he was the captain of a Danish merchant ship that was used in the West Indies . In 1840 he returned to the service of the Danish Navy and became the commandant of a schooner . In 1842 he took over command of the customs cruisers used in Schleswig-Holstein and was promoted to lieutenant captain in 1846 .

Schleswig-Holstein Navy and Imperial Fleet

Frigate Gefion / Eckernförde

When the Schleswig-Holstein War broke out in March 1848, he joined the Schleswig-Holstein Navy and was initially in command of the schooner Elbe , which had previously belonged to his area of ​​command. In the winter of 1848/49 he worked at the Naval Officer School. At the same time he became a member of the technical naval commission of the provisional central authority in Frankfurt under Prince Adalbert of Prussia and Karl Rudolf Brommy . In February 1849 he took over the rank of captain (corresponding to frigate captain ) briefly the supreme command of the Schleswig-Holstein Navy.

After the Danish sailing frigate Gefion fell into German hands in the battle near Eckernförde , Donner took command of this ship, which was renamed Eckernförde , on April 11, 1849 , and he was promoted to captain at sea . Since the frigate was not incorporated into the Schleswig-Holstein Navy, but into the Imperial Fleet, Donner also joined their service in April 1849. In June 1849 he became the commander of the steam frigate Hansa and retired on October 5, 1849 on the occasion of the normal autumn deactivation of the fleet. He then served in the naval department of the Federal Central Commission.

Prussian Navy

From 1850 to 1852 Donner was on leave to serve in the Prussian Navy as a sea captain and until the end of 1851 led the ships Amazone and Mercur one after the other . In December 1851 he took over the management of the Naval Training Institute. After his discharge from the service of the Reichsflotte, Donner was officially taken over as a sea captain in the Prussian navy in 1852. From then on he did land service in Gdansk as head of the naval depot, head of the naval station of the Baltic Sea and chief shipyard director of the Gdansk naval shipyard .

In the meantime, from April 1858 to September 1859, he once again took command of the now renamed Gefion . After his retirement he was given the character of Rear Admiral on May 31, 1862 . Donner died in 1873.
