Johann Paul Kaltenbaeck

Johann Paul Kaltenbaeck (born January 11, 1804 in Hofkirchen an der Trattnach , Upper Austria; † June 22, 1861 in Vienna ) was a historian.

He studied at Kremsmünster Abbey and studied philosophy and law at the University of Vienna. In 1834 he began with not very poetic poetry. Three of his poems were set to music by Wilhelm Reuling .

He worked at Joseph von Hormayr's Archive for History, Statistics, Literature and Art , which he ran independently from 1835–37 under the new name of the Austrian Journal for History and Politics . 1840-48 he edited the National Calendar Austria together with Johann Michael Joseph Salomon , in which he also published. In 1842 he married Julie Krafft .

1840–46 he was the history teacher of the three younger brothers of Emperor Franz Joseph and in 1850 accompanied Ferdinand Max and Carl Ludwig on their trip to Greece and Turkey.

1846–57 he was archivist at the House, Court and State Archives, where he was on leave from work as a councilor (member of the conservative and Catholic party) of the city of Vienna in 1848 and in 1851, after returning from Turkey, rose to become the first archivist and president of the Catholic (Severinus) Association founded in 1849. In 1849 he became co-editor of the Austrian Correspondent . His work in the archive was not worth mentioning, but he gained importance as a publicist. 1850-52 he was in the kk commission for theoretical state examination examiner for Austrian history. In 1857 he was retired due to illness.

A street in Penzing (Vienna) is named after him.
