Johann Peter Ahlers (born June 24, 1724 in Oldenburg ; † July 29, 1793 in Osternburg ) was a forest master in the counties of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst .

life and work

Johann Peter Ahlers came from a merchant family and was the youngest son of the quartermaster in the Oldenburg National Regiment Oeltje Ahlers (* 1693) and the pastor's daughter Anna Lucie born in Wiefelstede. Meyer. Like his father, he first served in the Oldenburg National Regiment and made it up to captain .

In 1752 he married the court heiress Anna Elisabeth Bolken from Wehnen , who, however, died the following year. In October 1753 Ahlers married the pastor's daughter Catharina Johanna Most. The farm in Wehnen, which his first wife had brought into the marriage, formed the basis for the extensive property, which Ahlers considerably expanded through clever acquisitions, planned improvements and the establishment of sheep farms, a fish farm and beekeeping on a large scale. In March 1761 the Danish governor in Oldenburg, Count Lynar, commissioned him to investigate the Oldenburg forests and also appointed him government representative in the timber sales commission. When the National Regiment was reduced in number in 1764 and finally dissolved in 1767, Ahlers tried to join the Oldenburg Forest Service. In 1771 he was appointed wood bailiff as well as forest and game master of the counties of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst. Ahlers was purely self-taught in forestry matters, but was able to fall back on extensive practical experience.

By sowing seeds, he created the first larger coniferous wood stocks in Oldenburg during his tenure. The Everstenholz park in Oldenburg, laid out in the style of a French park , is his work.

After the counties separated from Denmark in 1773, Ahlers was initially confirmed in his offices by the new government. However, in the course of the transformation of the Oldenburg forestry that began after 1779, his views increasingly came into conflict with colleagues and superiors. His jurisdiction was temporarily limited to the forest district of Oldenburg and Ahlers lost his right to vote in the chamber. In 1790 he was put back at the head of the entire forestry sector, in the reorganization of which he played an essential part despite all the negative side effects.

Johann Peter Ahlers lived on the Äüßste Damm in Easter castle from 1768 . In 1785 Ahlers was one of the founding members of the Oldenburg Casino Society . A tombstone in the Osternburg cemetery and a street name in Oldenburg-Bürgerfelde (“Ahlersweg”) keep the memory of Ahlers alive. In the Oldenburg City Museum , a painting shows Johann Peter Ahler in 1766 with his family.
