David Leakey

Arundell David Leakey CMG , CVO , CBE (born May 18, 1952 ) is a former British military commander and Director General of the European Union Military Staff . From 2010 to 2017 he was the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod .

Royal Tank Regiment

Career

After graduating from school in Sherborne , he attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst . The NCO was promoted to Second Lieutenant on February 27, 1971 and transferred to the Royal Tank Regiment . September 4, 1971 to July 1, 1974, he studied as a University Cadetship law at Fitzwilliam College of Cambridge University . During his further military career he was promoted frequently: 1974 to First Lieutenant and 1977 to Captain .

As a member of his tank association ( Chieftain and Challenger 1 ), he was stationed in Northern Ireland , Germany , Bosnia and Canada in addition to the United Kingdom . His training as a staff officer took place at Staff College, after which Camberley was promoted to major in 1984 , was appointed chief of staff of the 7th Tank Brigade in Germany and military assistant to the chief of the British Defense Staff and commander of the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment . In 1993 he was promoted to colonel.

His next assignment was in the UK Department of Defense as a member of the Chief Executive Officer for Military Operations. In this role he was responsible for the planning and execution at the locations in Eastern and Western Europe. In 1995 he attended the Joint Service Defense College (JSDC) at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich to be deployed as a British military representative in the peace negotiations to end the Bosnian War , which led to the Dayton Agreement, at the end of 1995 . He was then promoted to Brigadier in December 1995 . In 1996 he became commander of the 20th tank brigade based in Germany. With this brigade he was deployed in the former Yugoslavia from December 1996 to June 1997 .

European Union Military Staff

He returned to the Ministry of Defense as Head of Military Operations from July 1997 to December 1999, and in 2000 attended the Royal College of Defense Studies . He was Chief of Staff at Headquarters in Northern Ireland from February to December 2001 and was promoted to major general in late 2001 . From December 2001 to October 2004 he was General Director of Army Training and Recruiting .

European career

On October 6, 2004, he was appointed Chief Commander of Operation Althea (EUFOR Althea) of the European Union Force in Bosnia-Herzegovina . He reached the last stage of promotion in 2007 as lieutenant general . From March 1, 2007 to 2010, he was Director General of the Military Staff of the European Union in Brussels . He ended his military career on September 22, 2010.

Leakey was named Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod in the House of Lords on December 21, 2010 and reaffirmed on February 1, 2014 for the period ending January 31, 2017.

Private life

He is married and has two sons. The amateur musician's activities include serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the UK National Children's Orchestra
