Johann Peter Bachem

Johann Peter Bachem (born January 22, 1785 in Erpel , † May 9, 1822 in Cologne ) was a German publisher and bookseller and founder of JP Bachem Verlag .

Life

Johann Peter Bachem was born on January 22nd, 1785 in Erpel as the son of the mayor Wilhelm B. Bachem. After training as a bookseller with Hoffmann and Campe in Hamburg , he served as a lieutenant in the foot artillery in the Hanseatic Legion in the wars of liberation against Napoleon before he came to Cologne in August 1814. In February 1815, together with Marcus DuMont , he founded the DuMont-Bachem`sche Buchhandlung at Brückenstraße 4585 (today No. 8). Personal differences regarding the direction of the bookstore led to the dissolution of the partnership agreement between Bachem and DuMont on March 31, 1818 . Bachem then opened the printing works and publishing bookstore JP Bachem under his name on May 4, 1818 . With his brother Lambert he founded the Catholic daily Rheinische Volkshalle . After his early death in May 1822, his brother Lambert Bachem took over the company.
