Johann Philipp Freiherr von Bettendorf (born March 30, 1718 in Mainz ; † August 28, 1773 ibid) was imperial direct lord in Falkenstein and Niederhofheim and Electoral Mainz court marshal and grand court master and senior officer in Königstein im Taunus .

Life

Johann Philipp Freiherr von Bettendorf came from the Mainz branch of the von Bettendorf family . He was the second son and Grand Court Master of Kurmainz and Oberamtmann Lothar Johann Karl von Bettendorf (1674−1745) and his wife Countess Marie Sophie von Stadion .

With the death of his father in 1745 he was elected chief magistrate in the Königstein office and remained in this position until his death in 1773. He also took up his father’s offices at court in Mainz and became court marshal and grand court master.

As the heir of his father, who died in 1745, his older brother Lothar Franz Melchior Philipp Freiherr von Bettendorf became head of the Mainz branch of his family, imperial knight and hereditary imperial baron . He had possessions in Franconia and the Rheingau . The inherited rule over the castle and village of Falkenstein as a Nassau-Weilburg fief as well as Niederhofheim was more important under constitutional law . After Lothar Franz Melchior Philipp died childless in 1768, Johann Philipp became heir to the family property.

He married Luise Freiin Langwerth von Simmern on March 1, 1746 in Heidersheim . The marriage remained childless and so this line of the Bettendorf family died out in the male line in 1773.

There was a legal battle over the inheritance. The entire house in Nassau-Saarbrücken moved in the Falkenstein fief as it was in ruins. Only after lengthy negotiations was it agreed on a compromise. The possessions in Hornau went to Luise Freiin Langenwerth von Simmern as the widow's residence and Johann Philipp's sister Maria Sophie Charlotte Coudenhoven received the rule of Niederhofheim.
