History of origin

A forum post from 2012 reports: “It was a long way there. As early as the 1970s, various initiatives and activists wanted to turn this vision into reality. In 2003, the year of the European Capital of Culture , the museum (was) defined as a separate project, which was supposed to present an original and highly authentic collection and documentation. Of course, there was only one possible location: the hall 'P' of the former 'Einser Werk' in Puchstrasse, built in 1912 - exactly 100 years ago - which is now a listed building. "

Fans, collectors and former employees of Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG brought in exhibits. Likewise MAGNA STEYR Fahrzeugtechnik AG & Co KG , from which the remainder of SDPAG was taken over in 2001. Today Magna is the most important sponsor of the museum alongside the city of Graz .

A dynamic collection is shown, which changes exhibits in its individual areas again and again: "With its exhibits, our house creates an overview of the large sections of domestic mobility history, which radically got going around 150 years ago with the early bicycles."

The sponsor is an association. Karlheinz Rathkolb is chairman and museum director.

2003 to 2007

In 2002, enthusiasts set about creating a district exhibition in cooperation with the Graz boroughs of Liebenau and Puntigam , which was to lead to a Puch Museum. The former Lancia-FIAT sales pavilion, once owned by the historic Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG, was secured as the location for this . and in the periphery of the "Einser-Werk" by Johann Puch: "The exhibition about Johann Puch, set up as part of the 2003 Capital of Culture bar '17 cultural districts' of Liebenau and Puntigam on the area of the former" Einser-Werk "in Puchstrasse, has been extended. "

The pavilion was opened on April 22, 2003. At the end of the event year 2003 it was possible to rent Hall C of the plant. In this way, the inventory of own exhibits and loans could be presented on a larger area, but remained in uncertain circumstances. The status could only be secured in 2007.

On January 20, 2006, councilor Gertrude Schloffer stated: “Since my last inquiry in March of the previous year, the Puch Museum has been very quiet with regard to negotiations about the continued existence of this important facility.” She asked formally: “With whom is the Time to negotiate this matter or with whom are talks being held and what is the current status of negotiations with the aim that the Puch Museum can remain in Graz? "

From an urgent application in the Graz municipal council (“Re .: Innovationszentrum Graz - Puchmuseum”) it can be learned: “Hall 'C', where the museum is currently housed, and the offer the hall 'P' at the former 'Einserwerk' in Puchstraße, which was placed under monument protection by the Federal Monuments Office's decision of August 27, 2003. "

From this protocol, the following can be seen: “The Puchmuseum has already been funded by LH Waltraud Klasnic , LHStv. Hermann Schützenhöfer , LHStv. Dr. Kurt Flecker , Mayor Mag. Siegfried Nagl , StR Detlev Eisel-Eiselsberg , StR  Werner Miedl supported and thus secured in existence and operation. "At one point it also says:" The final local accommodation is currently open, as is the future financial Validation."

During these years the private commitment of fans, enthusiasts and “Puchians” was essential to ensure the continued existence of the museum.

2008 to 2011

The move from the aforementioned pavilion to Hall C was a big step on historical terrain. Hans Jörg Borstnar surveyed the situation for his 1985 diploma thesis. Thereafter, the current museum location in 2012 is designated as Hall P and is within sight of Hall C, where the museum was set up until 2011. In between there was once Hall A (“Alte Repa”, the former “repair shop”), of which nothing has remained.

In sum, this is the complex west of the Mühlgang , a river that still runs through the area today. This canal on the right side of the Mur River is still used in sections as a power source and cooling system: "There are a total of twelve hydroelectric power plants that are operated on the (right) mill passage." (The left canal was filled in around 1977).

From 2012

In the “Report to the Municipal Council” of January 19, 2012, it was noted: “The 'Puchmuseum' is supposed to return to its starting point and take up quarters in a hall area of 2,900 m² in the 'old Puchwerk'.” That means, where Hall P was Johann Puch still active personally. This is where the Puch Alpenwagen was built, where the Steyr-Puch Pinzgauer were built, and there has been a hundred years of Puch history.

The report states that IPG ( Innovationspark Graz Puchstraße GmbH ) rents out hall space of 2,900 m² in the listed Hall P to the city of Graz, Magna Steyr enters the project with a sponsorship agreement for the term of the lease and "Subsequently, the City of Graz to the 'Puchmuseum' association for the duration of the lease for free use. "

In January 2012, there were 14 days left for the move from Hall C to Hall P, followed by a new opening in the summer.
