Johann Reichwald von Fights (born November 9, 1609 in Semcaden, Lithuania , † February 28, 1662 in Kemnitz ) was a royal Swedish colonel and commander of Zittau .

Life

Johann Reichwald joined the Swedish military service in 1627 as a simple soldier, which he quit the following year to travel to the East Indies via Amsterdam . However, he went to France via England , where he was arrested as a spy. As soon as he was released he took part in the events of Rochelle , then joined the king's body regiment and came with them to the headquarters in Paris , where he took his leave. Then Reichwald came via Rotterdam and returned to the Swedish service.

In Colonel Kirchbaum's regiment, Reichwald quickly passed through the lower ranks, switched to Erich Anderson's regiment, where he first advanced to quartermaster and finally to lieutenant. He was seriously wounded in the battle of Wittstock and was even taken prisoner again outside Halle . After his release he advanced to the position of Oberstwachtmeister under Adam von Pfuel near Torgau . Field Marshal Johan Banér then assigned him command of six companies and four hundred German horsemen. After he had proven himself many times, Lennart Torstensson promoted him to colonel and commandant of Zittau in 1642 . Here he made a name for himself mainly by defending the city against the imperial forces , although he eventually had to hand over the Zittau. In 1647 Reichwald resigned from the Swedish service. Queen Christine of Sweden ennobled it in 1647 when she left it as the Reichwald von Fights .

Reichwald returned to his family in Lausitz and in 1648 acquired Kemnitz, Bischdorf and Mittelhorka. Reichwald was also able to develop his talents with his lordship; in addition, he is said to have largely abolished serfdom on his farms.
