Johann Rudolf Kiesling, also: Kießling; (* October 21, 1706 in Erfurt ; † April 17, 1778 in Erlangen ) was a German Lutheran theologian and orientalist.

Life

The son of the theologian Johann Kiesling received an education in his hometown. After attending the St. Augustin grammar school in Grimma, he enrolled at the University of Erfurt and switched to the University of Wittenberg for further studies in 1725 , where he obtained the degree of Master of Philosophy on October 17, 1729 . On April 16, 1731 he switched to theological studies at the University of Leipzig and was Vespers preacher at the Paulinerkirche in Leipzig . Thereupon he became administrator of the superintendent in Torgau , 1735 pastor in Bergwitz , in 1738 moved as fourth deacon to the city ​​church Wittenberg and held exegetical and homiletic lectures at the university there.

On October 1, 1740, he was accepted into the theological faculty of the University of Leipzig as a baccalaureate , where he was appointed associate professor of biblical philology in the same year , completed his licentiate in theology on July 26, 1744 and took over the full professorship in oriental languages. After receiving his doctorate in theology on July 7, 1746, he moved from Leipzig to the University of Erlangen as the third full professor of theology in 1762 and, after taking over the second theological professorship in 1765, took over the post of preacher in the old town.

Kiesling has dealt extensively with church history. He has also written several writings on exegetical topics, the polemics of his time, church history and writings on antiquities. As a co-editor he had participated in the publication of the “New Contributions of Old and New Theological Matters”, continued Valentin Ernst Löscher Historia Motuum from 1751 to 1761 and was Rector of the 1764, 1767, 1771 summer semesters and 1774/75 winter semesters Graduated from college.
