Johann Schauer (politician)

Johann Nepomuk Schauer (born April 26, 1840 in Lambach ; † June 12, 1914 in Wels ) was an Austrian lawyer , politician and mayor of Wels.

Johann Schauer, son of a master rope maker, attended the Abbey High School in Kremsmünster . From 1860 to 1864 he studied law at the University of Vienna , in 1866 he received a doctorate in Innsbruck Dr. jur., he also attended the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna . From 1864 he worked as a trainee in a law firm in Wels , and from 1871 to 1910 as an independent lawyer. In 1874 he was elected to the local council and in 1887 he became mayor of Wels. From 1890 to 1892 and from 1896 to 1914 he was a liberal member of the Upper Austrian state parliament and from 1889 to 1897 a member of the Reichsrat , where he was a member of the constitutional party .

During his tenure, a new bridge over the Traun , the district court building, the Landwehr barracks and the slaughterhouse were built. He promoted the school system and the city library and was a co-founder of the beautification association and the city band. In 1863 he was one of the founders of the Wels volunteer fire brigade , from 1884 to 1904 he was chairman of the central committee of the Upper Austrian state fire brigade association . Schauer was also known as a talented draftsman and landscape painter.

Schauer, who was married to Anna Kreilmayr but had no children, was an honorary citizen of Wels.
