Johann Schulte (born March 27, 1751 in Hamburg ; † August 30, 1817 there ) was a German lawyer and Hamburg councilor .

Origin and family

Schulte was a son of the Hamburg mayor Albert Schulte (1716–1786) from his marriage to Margaretha Maria Luis (1724–1766), daughter of the mayor Johann Hermann Luis (1683–1741).

On April 11, 1780, Schulte married his cousin Sara Catharina Luis (* 1756), daughter of the mayor Johann Luis (1722–1788). The couple had five daughters.

Live and act

Schulte attended the learned school of the Johanneum and the Academic Gymnasium in Hamburg and then studied law at the universities of Leipzig and Göttingen . In Göttingen he completed his doctorate on August 22, 1774 Doctor of Laws .

After his studies he returned to Hamburg and established himself as a lawyer . On June 18, 1784 he was elected council secretary and on February 11, 1789 elected councilor. In 1801 Schulte traveled to Saint Petersburg as councilor for Emperor Alexander's accession to the throne and brought him the congratulations of the Hamburg council. In 1803 he traveled to Paris and congratulated Napoleon Bonaparte on being elected consul for life, and in 1804 he traveled again to Paris for Napoleon I's coronation . During the Hamburger Franzosenzeit held Schulte as President of the French Commercial Tribunal in Hamburg. After the council was reinstated in 1814, Schulte took over his old office as councilor again. He died three years later.

Since Schulte had no son, the male line of the Hanseatic Schulte family in Hamburg died out with him in 1817 . The family had provided two mayors, four councilors, an elder and a protonotary in Hamburg for seven generations .
