Johann Sigismund Gottfried Huth

Johann Sigismund Gottfried Huth (born May 2, 1763 in Rosslau (Elbe) ; † February 28 jul. / March 12, 1818 greg. In Tartu ) was a professor of mathematics and physics.

He studied together with Ernst Christoph Knorre in Halle with Wenceslaus Johann Gustav Karsten († April 1787) and Johann Christian Foerster , with whom he received his doctorate on July 9, 1787 .

In 1788 he held private lectures at the University of Halle on the basics of algebra based on Karsten's textbooks and in the following year became professor of physics and mathematics at the University of Frankfurt (Oder) , where Heinrich von Kleist was one of his students around 1799 . Knorre and Huth were later mathematics professors at the German-speaking University of Dorpat in Estonia (Livonia), where Wilhelm von Struve was his student. Both are buried on the university field of the Raadi cemetery there.

Since 1812 Huth was a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .

In Frankfurt around 1789 he took part in Christian Ernst Wünsch's acoustic experiments . In 1796 he had in JH Lambert : A Treatise on Some Acoustic Instruments. From the French ... along with additions about the so-called horn of Alexander the Great, about experiences with an elliptical speaking tube, an acoustic speaking tube system suggested that he called "the telephone".
