Life

Johann Steuerlein was born on July 5, 1546 as the son of Pastor Caspar Steuerlein in Schmalkalden. First he studied law in Wittenberg and Jena and was appointed town clerk in Wasungen in 1569 . 20 years later he went to Meiningen to work as a Henneberg office secretary. The city mayor of Meiningen he was appointed in 1604. He held this post until 1612. Johann Steuerlein died on May 5, 1613. Rudolf II had awarded him the poet's crown , and he had also worked as an imperial notary .

Steuerlein has made a name for himself as a poet of sacred songs and as a composer . In Wittenberg he published his first polyphonic chants in 1571, he also published foreign hymns, but also dealt with secular songs. The author of the ADB wrote, "As a poet of spiritual songs he [Steuerlein] is less important." Steuerlein is said to have converted the entire Bible into chants, but only one rhyming of Jesus Sirach from 1581 can be proven . The unknown ADB author further judged that the most famous song, which is attributed to Steuerlein, was The old year has passed, we thank you, Lord Jesus Christ , but authorship is not guaranteed.

Johann Steuerlein may have taught Melchior Vulpius in Wasungen .
