Johann Straubenmüller
Johann Straubenmüller , later John Straubenmuller (born May 11, 1814 in Schwäbisch Gmünd , † November 12, 1897 in Manhattan , New York ) was a German-American teacher and poet and a member of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn's gymnastics movement .
As a non-permanent teacher he worked in Ellwangen , Stuttgart , Schwäbisch Gmünd and Horb . In 1848 the gymnast fought for freedom with speeches and poems. For example, he railed against the Bundestag :
“You Metternich spirits
pack up and go home!
The people are masters of themselves
and your game is over! "
A poem that appeared in the Black Forest messenger led to his arrest for inciting high treason. "Pardoned" to emigrate, he was unable to find a job in Switzerland. Efforts to get a job at a private educational establishment in Stuttgart should be said by Minister Duvernoy with the words As long as Straubenmüller is in the country, there is still no rest! have thwarted.
In 1852 Straubenmüller moved to North America. In Baltimore he worked as a teacher and organist. From 1863 to 1876 he was director of the "Free German School" in New York .
His most extensive work is the epic " Pocahontas , or: The founding of Virginia" ( Baltimore 1858).
