Johann Victor Krämer (born August 23, 1861 in Adamsthal , Austrian Empire , † May 6, 1949 in Vienna ) was an Austrian painter who mainly cultivated the genre of Orientalism .

Live and act

Krämer was the son of an engineer based in Adamsthal near Brno . With a scholarship from Johann von Liechtenstein , who was to remain his sponsor until the 1920s, Krämer graduated from the arts and crafts school in Vienna from 1878 to 1881. From 1881 to 1883 he attended the general painting school of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, from 1883 to 1888 he was a student of the well-known Austrian history and oriental painter Leopold Carl Müller . Even as a student, Krämer received several prizes, including the so-called Rome Prize in 1888. The associated travel grant took him from 1888 to 1890 to Paris, London, Madrid, Tangier (together with Hermann Bahr ) and Italy.

In 1891, Krämer moved into his studio in Vienna. A two-year trip to Egypt and Palestine took him to Abu Simbel and Baalbek from 1898 to 1900 . For a time, Krämer also worked as a drawing teacher for the family of the industrialist Karl Wittgenstein . In 1897 he was one of the founders of the Vienna Secession .

Krämer was active as an artist well into his old age and turned increasingly to religious topics in his advanced years. In the last few decades, in connection with the increased interest in 19th century oriental painting, which can be seen around the world, Krämer's work has also attracted increased attention.

Krämer was a member of the German Association of Artists .
