Johann Wilhelm Baumer (born September 10, 1719 in Rehweiler ; † August 4, 1788 in Gießen ) was a German physicist, medic and mineralogist.

Life

The son of the chief forester Johann Baumer and his wife Anna Magarethe Nothnagel had attended high schools in Itzehoe and Schweinfurt . From 1739 to 1741 he had studied philosophical sciences and theology at the University of Halle and the University of Jena . In Jena he had received the academic degree of a master's degree in philosophical sciences and held lectures at the philosophical faculty as a private lecturer . In 1742 he became pastor in Krautheim , which position he gave up again in 1746 for health reasons in order to devote himself to medical studies at the University of Halle.

After his promotion in 1748 to the doctor of medicine, a scholarly journey that took him to Brandenburg and Dutch universities undertook. Then settled as a doctor in Erfurt. At the University of Erfurt he became a professor of physics in 1754 , was an assessor at the medical faculty in 1757, and in the same year became a full professor of medicine and in 1758 a councilor. In 1764 he moved to the University of Giessen as a professor of medicine , where he became both mountain and rural physicist. In 1777 he became a full professor of chemistry and mineralogy at the Faculty of Economics in Giessen.

The intellectual initiator of the Churfürstlich-Mayntzische Gesellschaft or Academy of Useful Sciences founded in 1754, today's Academy of Charitable Sciences in Erfurt , had developed many interests as a polyhistor. Above all, he has remained in the minds of the sciences as a mineralogist, as he tried to classify minerals according to their physical-chemical properties.

Baumer had been married twice. His first marriage was with Johanne Christine Richter. His second marriage was in 1779 with Marie Juliane Hennemann. It is known about the children:
