Johann Wilhelm Engelbrecht

Johann Wilhelm Engelbrecht (born January 15, 1674 in Hameln ; † December 12, 1729 in Helmstedt ) was a German lawyer and professor at the University of Helmstedt .

Live and act

Johann Wilhelm Engelbrecht came from a family of lawyers. His grandfather Arnold Engelbrecht (1583–1638) was Chancellor and secret councilor in Wolfenbüttel , his father Julius Arnold Heinrich Engelbrecht (1635–1675) doctor of both rights and councilor . His uncle Georg Engelbrecht the elder and his cousins Georg Engelbrecht the younger and Christoph Johann Conrad Engelbrecht were law professors in Helmstedt . Johann Wilhelm studied philosophy and law in Helmstedt, Halle (?) And Leipzig.

After completing his studies, he was first court master for two young noblemen from Rheden in Halle and then on appointment by Abbot Molanus Syndic of the Loccum monastery .

In 1701 he was offered a chair at the philosophical faculty of the University of Helmstedt. In 1705 he switched to a law professorship at the local law faculty. The following year he received his doctorate in law from the University of Rinteln . He was vice-rector of the university three times (1712, 1716 and 1726). In 1727 he was appointed British-Brunswick-Lüneburg court counselor.

Johann Wilhelm Engelbrecht wrote several legal writings on different areas. He particularly distinguished himself in teaching.

He was married to Hedwig Sophia Best (1688-1722).
