Georg Engelbrecht the Elder (born March 4, 1638 in Hildesheim , † August 24, 1705 in Helmstedt ) was a German lawyer , professor at the University of Helmstedt and Brunswick-Lüneburg council.

The son of the Princely Brunswick-Lüneburg Council Arnold Engelbrecht (* December 15, 1582 in Wernigerode; † August 30, 1638 in Wildungen) and his second wife Anna von Neefe (* 1599 in Chemnitz; † April 25, 1661), the widow of Princely Magdeburg Court Councilor in Halle Arnold Preun (* Eisleben, † July 1, 1625 in Halle (Saale)) and daughter of the ennobled Paul Neefe († July 5, 1600 in Chemnitz) and his wife Anna Röber (* December 20, 1564 in Görlitz ; † December 6, 1618 in Chemnitz), was initially trained by private teachers. In 1655 he came to Hameln , 1656 to the grammar school in Göttingen and in 1658 he moved to the University of Helmstedt .

Here he attended the lectures of Christoph Schrader , Johann Eichel von Rautenkron in ethics, Hermann Conring in politics, public and private law, Heinrich Hahn (1605-1668) , Georg Werner and Enoch glasses (1628-1668). In the meantime, he had attended the University of Leipzig for half a year, received a licentiate in law on September 21, 1665 and went on an educational trip in 1666. This led him to Kassel , to the University of Cologne , to the court in Speyer and to the University of Strasbourg , where he attended lectures by Johann Rebhan (1604–1689) and Johann Heinrich Boecler (1611–1672). This trip also took him through French cities, where he met Etienne Baluze (1630-1718) and Johannes Cappelanus in Paris . He then moved on to Holland, where he made the acquaintance of Johann Friedrich Böckelmann (1633–1681) at the University of Leiden .

In 1667 he returned to Helmstedt, where he continued to participate in the university's reading business. In 1669 he became an associate professor at the law faculty, shortly thereafter received his doctorate in law and in 1672 became a full professor of law at the Helmstedt University. In 1688 he was a senior in the law faculty and in 1688 he was appointed to the court of Duke Georg Wilhelm in Celle as a princely Brunswick-Lüneburg councilor . Engelbrecht also took part in the organizational tasks of the Helmstedt University and was Vice-Rector of the Alma Mater five times.

He concluded his second marriage on February 29, 1681 with Catharina Hedwig, eldest daughter of the professor of theology in Helmstedt Gerhard Titius . Her daughter comes from this marriage:

He concluded his third marriage in July 1688 in Celle with Barbara Catharina, middle daughter of the princely Hessian-Darmstadt court counselor Christoph Helffrich Ulner. The two sons are from this marriage:
