Johann Wilhelm Hertel (born October 9, 1727 in Eisenach , † June 14, 1789 in Schwerin ) was a German composer .

Life

Hertel came from a family of musicians in Eisenach and received lessons in violin and piano from his father, Johann Christian Hertel . In 1742 he came with him to Mecklenburg-Strelitz, where he worked as a violinist and harpsichordist in 1744. After studying in Zerbst and Berlin , he came to Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1754, first as a concertmaster, then as a “court and capell composer”. Under Duke Christian Ludwig II. Hertel wrote particularly representative instrumental music, under his successor Friedrich (called "the Pious") the focus of his work shifted to sacred music. From 1759 to 1760 he was organist at the Marienkirche in Stralsund . In 1770 he was appointed court counselor; he was the private secretary of Princess Ulrike Sophie and gave music lessons in circles at the Schwerin court. His descendants include the composer Paul Hertel and the oboist Alfred Hertel .

plant

Hertel wrote a large number of symphonies , solo concerts (including two cello concertos and three harp or harpsichord concerts), harpsichord sonatas , songs, psalms, cantatas and oratorios . He is considered an important representative of the “ sensitive style ” of the German pre-classical period . His symphonies in D major and G major, the bassoon concerto in A minor, and his harpsichord sonata in D minor were particularly popular.
