Paul Hertel
Paul Hertel (born May 9, 1953 in Vienna ) is an Austrian composer , music producer and conductor .
Life
Hertel's grandfather was a sculptor , his father, Otto Hertel, horn player in the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera , and Hertel's brother, Alfred Hertel , was the first oboist in the orchestra of the Vienna Volksoper and with the Lower Austrian Tonkünstler. Paul Hertel's musical training began early. At the age of five he received violin lessons, later piano and guitar.
After passing the Matura at the Hernalser Gymnasium Geblergasse , Hertel studied theater studies at the University of Vienna . He received his doctorate in theater studies in 1978. At the same time he had started studying composition (with Heinrich Gattermeyer ) and composition (with Erich Urbanner ) at the Hochschule für Musik . In 1983 he also completed this course with a diploma. Further studies with Alfred Uhl provided in-depth instruction in composition. In addition, Hertel completed specialized courses in electroacoustics (with Roman Haubenstock-Ramati ), jazz harmonics (with Heinz Czadek ) and choral conducting (with Günther Theuring ).
Composition in the field of incidental music
Paul Hertel began his own creative work while still a student. Since 1979 he has created a series of works that have been performed at concerts at home and abroad as well as at festivals such as “Aspects Salzburg”, “ Styrian Autumn ”, “Austria Today” ( Konzerthaus Wien 1986, 1987, 1989, 1990), “ Cité Internationale des Arts ”as well as at festivals in Huddersfield and Ville-d'Avray . In 1985 Hertel was hired by the Theater für Vorarlberg (later Vorarlberger Landestheater Bregenz ) as stage composer and musical director. Hertel created the music for new theater productions in the period that followed. Depending on whether there is original music - as in Nestroy pieces -, these compositions are to be regarded as an arrangement or, in the case of plays without music - for example in Schiller's Maria Stuart - as a new composition.
For some pieces, the original music - partly in the style of the time, partly with deliberate style breaks in compositional or instrumental terms - was added. These compositions usually consist of individual numbers connecting scenes or mood music similar to film music. A total of around 25 stage music was created, including for the Schwäbisch Hall open-air theater, the Vienna Volkstheater , the Chur Theater and the United Theaters in Graz . Inspired by the numerous stage compositions made for existing pieces, Paul Hertel wrote his first full-length musical and dramatic work in 1988, the musical Askalun , which premiered in Pforzheim .
In an adapted new version, Askalun was shown at the 1992 Wiener Festwochen in a circus tent in front of the Votive Church. After the successful performance of the children's opera Rabautz, also in 1988, his own music-dramatic work took a back seat for 15 years in favor of the composition of stage music, film and television music and works of new music. Later, the composition of chamber operas and especially children's operas again became the focus of creative work. The most important work in this genre is Elster and Parzival , a work commissioned by the Deutsche Oper Berlin . The world premiere on March 29, 2003 followed in September 2006 - also at the Deutsche Oper Berlin - the world premiere of the shortened new version.
In 2015, Hertel created Sisi - The Move Trilogy Suite for the newly founded Synchron Stage Vienna . A three-movement suite for large orchestra was developed from the partly small fragments of the handwritten score of the Sissi film trilogy .
Orchestral and chamber music
Instrumental and vocal compositions for large orchestra and chamber orchestra make up the largest part of the opus numbers in Paul Hertel's work. Here, too, a great variety of styles can be recognized, from the classic string quartet form to the piece for brass. Hertel has distributed the solo instruments fairly evenly between strings and winds. The pieces range from the two-minute miniature to the expansive one-hour piece. The solo song is also a central compositional concern of Hertel. The text templates are very different and range from the 1000 year old Chinese poem to the erotic texts of Wolf Wondratschek .
Producer, promoter and organizer of contemporary music
While studying at ORF in Vienna, Hertel began a series on contemporary music, made understandable for the audience. He later organized series of concerts and promoted newer music in general. In 1979 Hertel co-founded the “Project World Premiere” (today “Creatives Centrum, Vienna”). During the 21 seasons that he artistically supervised this series of events, over 800 works (including 220 world premieres) by around 250 composers were performed at more than 200 concerts worldwide.
In concert series at the Vienna Konzerthaus , in the Auditorium Maximum of the University of Vienna and at the Vienna City Festival, many young, now renowned artists had the opportunity to present their works to a broad public for the first time. Concerts at previously unfamiliar locations as well as concerts in connection with poetry readings paved the way for current music to attract new audiences. Wolf Wondratschek , HC Artmann , Wolfgang Bauer u. a. took part in these concert readings and reading concerts.
Between 1994 and 1998 Hertel was the producer of the group Streetgang - "Seven kids from five nations". The young singers were funded by the “Youth for Europe” program of the EU and the Vienna Integration Fund and had numerous appearances. a. on ORF, at the Vienna Danube Island Festival and at the Hallamasch Festival. At the youth song contest “Blue Pearl of Rovinj” in 1994 the group came second.
Since 2005 Paul Hertel has been giving guest lectures at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz on the subject of “Project-related multimedia composition”.
Film and television productions
During his music studies, Paul Hertel had already designed music programs as a freelancer for ORF / radio, WDR and Deutschlandfunk. A series of programs that should bring contemporary music closer in an understandable way deserves special mention. In total, Paul Hertel was the designer and presenter of around 200 programs.
He also appeared in music and theater broadcasts as an assistant director for ORF / television. Through these creative activities, Hertel had also acquired a wealth of knowledge in the field of drama, which he was able to incorporate into his own compositional work. This also includes experience in dealing with film and television music, an area that is usually neglected in current composition lessons. In 1982 Hertel received his first commission for a television production. In the meantime, he has composed the music for 18 feature films and television films, and in some cases also produced it. These were productions in which a wide range of styles from baroque to electronic music had to be covered. An important work in this area is the ORF's order for a five-part series on the occasion of the celebrations for Austria's 1000th anniversary. In 1987, Hertel was elected to the “Free Academy of the Arts Mannheim” (today “Free Academy of the Arts Rhein-Neckar”) for the film music “The Good Place” (production: Sabbelli-Film).
Paul Hertel's compositions are characterized by the inclusion of contradicting stylistic elements. The respective choice of means and their combination result in a very personal style, which is sometimes only developed for a single piece. Hertel does not shy away from using simple traditional forms and stylistic devices and giving them an individual character. To make the musical into a central position, to incorporate the avant-garde and in turn to fertilize it again through contemporary composition techniques, is at the center of Hertel's creative interest.
