Günther Theuring

Günther Theuring (born November 28, 1930 in Paris ; † March 22, 2016 in Vienna ) was an Austrian conductor and choir director .

Life

Günther Theuring received his first musical training with the Vienna Boys' Choir and later studied conducting with Ferdinand Grossmann and Hans Swarowsky at what is now the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (the then Academy for Music and Performing Arts, Vienna) .

In 1955, Ferdinand Grossmann handed him the management of the Chamber Choir of the Vienna Music Academy , with which he undertook four tours to the United States under the management of Columbia Artists New York.

In 1959 he founded the “Wiener Jeunesse Choir”, which under his direction developed into one of the most renowned choirs in Europe and was one of the preferred vocal ensembles of Paul Hindemith and Leonard Bernstein , among others . Together with the Jeunesse Choir, he recorded all of his vocal-instrumental works on record. The Jeunesse Choir was the first Western European choir to perform choral works from the 2nd Vienna School in Moscow and Leningrad in 1975 under the direction of Günther Theuring .

In 1971 he founded the "Ensemble Contraste Wien", a vocal and instrumental ensemble that made a name for itself in Europe with its interpretation of the music of the 2nd Viennese School .

Since 1960 Günther Theuring has worked as a conductor in Austria, Belgium , Germany , Israel , Spain , the USA and Japan , among others with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra , the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra ( 8th Symphony by Gustav Mahler in the 1985 Mahler cycle), the orchestra of the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk MDR ( Egon Wellesz ), the Orchestra of the Milan Scala (Schubert "Lazarus", Mendelssohn "Elias"), the Prague Symphony , the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra , the Slovak Philharmonic , the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg , the Budapest Symphony , the Orchestra of Danish Radio Copenhagen (e.g. Henze "Novae de infinito laudes"), the ORF Symphony Orchestra and the Lower Austrian Tonkünstler Orchestra, as well as with the choir of MDR Leipzig, the choir of Bavarian Radio Munich, the Frankfurter Rundfunkchor, the Budapest Radio Choir, the Danish Radio Choir Copenhagen, the RIAS Chamber Choir, the ORF Choir Vienna, the Wiener Singakademie and the Slovenski K omorni Zbor Ljubljana. He has made guest appearances at the Wiener Festwochen , the Festival de Barcelona, ​​the Israel Festival, the Festival de Monreale, Palermo and the 200th anniversary of the Scala di Milano .

In 1973 Günther Theuring was appointed to the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where he was full professor of a conducting class for vocal symphonic music until his retirement in 1999. In 1975 he founded the “Wiener Meisterkurse” together with the City of Vienna, of which he has been artistic director ever since. In 1987 he was the artistic director of the "First World Symposium for Choral Music" in Vienna, which was organized by the "Austrian Society for Choral Music" and the "International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM)".
