Johann Wilhelm Josef Castello

Johann Wilhelm Josef Castello (born December 26, 1758 in Kastellaun , † April 27, 1830 in Trier ) was a German priest , cathedral dean , steward and professor of encyclopedia , patrology and literary history at the University of Trier .

Johann Wilhelm Josef Castello was a son of the married couple Philippus (locksmith by trade) and Anna Maria Castello, born Gillens from Kastellaun. He spent his school days in Merl on the Moselle in the local minorite monastery until 1772 , before he switched to the grammar school in Koblenz for the 5th grade . At the age of 21 he went to Trier in 1779 to enter the Trier Episcopal Seminary, which had opened a few years earlier . After successfully completing his degree, he was ordained a priest on April 25, 1782 and was chaplain in Hundsangen from 1783 to 1784 . From 1784 to 1787 he was steward at Molsberg Castle with Count von Walderdorff, before returning to the seminary in Trier on June 21, 1787 as Subregens . In 1788 he received his doctorate in theology and a short time later he was given a position as professor of encyclopedia , patrology and literary history at Trier University . After his dissertation was published in 1791, he was dismissed from the seminary because he was assumed to have an enlightened and anti-clerical orientation and a tendency towards Febronianism . In 1792 he went to St. Wendel as a pastor . His appointment to the municipal council of the canton of St. Wendel earned him a high reputation among the population . In 1814 he changed the pastor one last time to work as a pastor in Neumagen-Dhron , before he was called back to Trier to the consistorial and school council in 1816. Castello was awarded the episcopal honorary title of cathedral dean in 1824.
