Johann Wilhelm von Göbel (also Goebel; born March 21, 1683 in Höxter ; † March 6, 1745 in Helmstedt ) was a German lawyer and professor at the University of Helmstedt .

Live and act

Göbel, the son of the preacher Franciscus Göbel from Amelunxen and Anna Sophia geb. Schwanenflügel studied law and theology in Jena, Königsberg, Rinteln and Helmstedt. After working as private tutor for the sons of Hofrat Müller in Helmstedt and educator of a son of General von Bülow in Utrecht and Leiden, Göbel first went to Strasbourg, where the lawyers Ulrich Obrecht and Johann Georg Scherz were among his circle of friends, and then as a lawyer to Hanover. There he worked as an employee of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz on the edition of an adjusted edition of the Corpus Juris Civilis .

1716 doctorate he in Basel for Doctor of Law and was appointed to a professorship at the law school of the University of Helmstedt . In 1730 he was raised to the nobility for his services. In the same year he became a councilor and assessor at the court in Braunschweig. Also in 1730 he married Sophia Dorothea Comtesse de Lippe (1692–1755), a daughter of the Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel Lieutenant General Georg zur Lippe-Brake zu Holzminden († 1703) and Agnes Dorothea Marie nee. Sauermann († 1696) and granddaughter of the ruling Count Otto zur Lippe-Brake († 1657). When her father died in 1703, her cousin, the ruling Count Rudolph zur Lippe-Brake († 1707), awarded her and her two sisters a grant of 3000 thalers . The marriage resulted in three daughters and two sons.

From 1726 Göbel was a foreign member of the Royal Prussian Society of Sciences .

Göbel's legal work dealt, among other things, with constitutional law and private law . They enjoyed a high contemporary reputation. His collection and new edition of Hermann Conring's writings should be emphasized , which he provided with his own comments and published in 1730 in seven folio volumes.
