Johann Georg Scherz

Johann Georg Scherz (also Jean-Georges Scherz or Johannes Georgius Scherzius ; born March 29, 1678 in Strasbourg ; † April 1, 1754 ibid) was a German legal scholar , Germanist and university professor .

Life

Scherz initially studied at the University of Strasbourg until 1698 . He then went to the Universities of Halle and Rostock before receiving his doctorate in 1702 . He received a professorship for moral philosophy , then in 1711 a chair in law, which he held until the end of his life. In 1730, at the age of 52, he also became a canon at the St. Thomas Church in Strasbourg. He later became dean and provost of the monastery.

Scherz dealt with philosophy , history and law as well as the German language. His merit lies in particular in determining the origin of the word for old German terms. His Glossarium Germanicum medii aevi was published posthumously by Jeremias Jakob Oberlin .
