Johann Wilhelm von Monjou

Johann Wilhelm von Monjou alias Friedrich Otto von Monjou (often with the French nobility title de) was a Prussian major in the Seven Years War .

Life

Monjou came from an old noble French family.

After changing from French to Prussian service , he took over the free battalion (No. 5) of Chossignon, who had stayed outside Dresden on June 12, 1758 . During the war he took part in combat operations with his battalion in front of Freiberg and Chemnitz in October 1758 , in November in the Weißen Hirsch , and in April 1759 between Peterswald and Nollendorf , and finally in front of Aussig . On June 24th, 1759 Monjou received his farewell , his free battalion (No. 5) was on this date in the Free Battalion (No. 7) of General Wunsch .

Monjou had corresponded with Frederick the Great several times .

Trivia

A total of three Volga-German advertising colonies in the then Russian Empire bore the following names in his honor: Obermonjou (today Kriwowskoje), Niedermonjou (Bobrowka) and Neu-Obermonjou (Novo-Kriwowskoje). Friedrich Otto von Monjou was the second colony director after a Baron de Caneau de Beauregard. As the first of the three named, the colony of Obermonjou was founded in 1767. During the Second World War, the Volga German ASSR was dissolved and the formerly German towns were given their current Russian names.
