family

origin

Johann XVII. came from the family of the Chamberlain of Worms . There are different views on how it should be classified genealogically there:

  • The most likely assumes that his father Johann XI. (Hennichen) was, called von Hohenstein, also called from 1366 "von Dalberg" († October 9, 1415, buried in the Katharinenkirche in Oppenheim ), bailiff of the city and castle of Oppenheim and since 1377 court master of the Elector of the Palatinate . It is then unclear who the mother of Johann XVII. because the father married twice. Either it was his first wife, Elisabeth († August 25, 1397, buried in the Katharinenkirche in Oppenheim), daughter of Philip the Elder of Winneburg or the second wife of Johann XI. Chamberlain of Worms, Anna († May 22, 1415, buried in the Katharinenkirche in Oppenheim), daughter of Konrad von Bickenbach , whom he had married before March 26, 1398. Both come as the mothers of Johann XVII. Chamberlain of Worms into consideration.
  • A lesser opinion assumes that Peter III. (the younger) († March 20, 1397) and his second wife, Ida von Franckenstein (named until 1405) the parents of Johann XVII. Chamberlain of Worms.

Marriage and children

Johann XVII. married Anna in 1424 († April 10, 1466), daughter of Hans and Guitgin von Helmstatt . Anna was buried in the Katharinenkirche in Oppenheim . They had three children together:

  1. Wolfgang III. Chamberlain of Worms , called von Dalberg (born September 4, 1426, † September 20, 1476). He became court marshal of the Palatinate Elector Friedrich I and founded the most famous and historically most important branch of the Chamberlain of Worms, the Dalberg family .
  2. Philip I of Herrnsheim (August 28, 1428 - May 3, 1492). He became the council of the Bishop of Speyer .
  3. Anna (* 1427) married Kaspar von Fleckenstein

After the death of Johann XVII. On July 2, 1431 in the Battle of Bulgnéville, his cousin, Dieter IV. Chamberlain of Worms , - probably together with their mother - took over the guardianship of the underage children Johann XVII.

Worth knowing

Another daughter, Guda, is mentioned in the literature, who lived as a nun in Marienberg Abbey near Boppard and is mentioned in 1464. At the same time, a niece of the same name is mentioned in the same monastery and also in 1464. In other literature Guda is not mentioned among the children of Johann XVII. listed.

Act

Johann XVII. became mayor of Oppenheim in 1428. He had a large fortune and lent the elector and archbishop Konrad of Mainz 15,500 guilders. This pledged him for Germersheim and some surrounding villages.

1431 belonged to Johann XVII. to a contingent of about 500 knights, which the Elector Palatinate , Ludwig III. , his brother-in-law, René I von Anjou , to enforce his claims to the inheritance of the Duchy of Lorraine . Many of them died on July 2, 1431 in the Battle of Bulgnéville , including John XVII.
