Life

Johanna Magdalena von Gersdorf from the noble family of the same name was born on December 31, 1706 on the Großhennersdorf estate near Zittau in Upper Lusatia . When the mother, a granddaughter of David von Schweinitz , died, the eleven-year-old Johanna Magdalena was further raised by her pious but widowed great-aunt Henriette Catharina von Gersdorff . Through their upbringing, she received a talent for poetry, and she also learned Latin , Greek and French . She already turned to the faith through her great aunt, but at the age of 17 she turned completely back after a lecture by the Großhennersdorf pastor Gottlob Adolph about rebirth .

At the age of 33, Johanna Magdalena von Gersdorf came to the court in Copenhagen in 1740 and acted as lady-in-waiting of the then Hereditary Princess of Denmark . On August 28, 1742, she married Hofmarschall Rudolf Freiherr von Geusau in Saalfeld . Another two years later, on December 17, 1744, she died there at the age of 37, where she had made fame through her poems. In the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie , her life was characterized as simple and pious.

Two of her poems were included in the collection of new songs that appeared in Wernigerode in 1752 .
