Gottlob Adolph (born October 30, 1685 in Niederwiese ( Upper Lusatia ) near Greiffenberg , † August 1, 1745 in Hirschberg , Silesia ) was a German hymn poet .

Life

Gottlob Adolph was born on October 30, 1685 in Niederwiese (later Wiesa) near Greiffenberg, the son of Pastor Christoph Adolph and Ms. Raisins (née Brücknerin). He attended the grammar school in Zittau and studied from 1701 at the University of Leipzig . In 1705 he was awarded the master's degree . Next he worked as a private tutor and from 1713 as a teacher at a school in Hirschberg. In 1714 he married Ana Maria, nee Schwertner. From 1720 he was also active as a pastor in Großhennersdorf . Adolph was friends with the pastor in Berthelsdorf , Johann Andreas Rothe ; with him he experienced both the settlement of the Bohemian brothers and the founding of Herrnhut . In Hirschberg, Adolph was initially elected deacon in 1727 and archdeacon in 1730 . He died there on August 1, 1745, as he was struck by lightning during his sermon in the pulpit .
