The Johanne was used in the North and Baltic Seas as well as in the Atlantic. On August 22, 1881 she was abandoned by her crew in the sinking state in the Atlantic, and her cargo of petroleum and tobacco sank in boxes. The crew was picked up by the schooner William Wilson . The next day the drifting wreck was encountered at position 29 ° North, 57 ° West by the American schooner Helen F. Simmons . During the search of the wreck, the captain of the Helen found a slip of paper with the information that the Johanne had already been dismasted in a hurricane on August 16 and had run full of water.
