Johannes Behm

Johannes Martin Behm (born June 6, 1883 in Doberan ; † October 13, 1948 in Berlin ) was a German Lutheran theologian and university professor.

Life

Behm, a son of the later regional bishop of Mecklenburg-Schwerin Heinrich Behm , studied from 1901 at the universities of Erlangen and Rostock and passed his first theological exam in 1905. During his studies he became a member of the C. St. V. Uttenruthia Erlangen in 1901 . Since 1908 Repetent of New Testament exegesis at the University of Erlangen, he was 1911 there for the licentiate doctorate and taught since 1912 as a lecturer of New Testament theology. After a short interlude in Breslau and service as a soldier in World War I , Behm became an associate in 1916 . Professor at the University of Königsberg , where he was promoted to full professor in 1920. In 1923 he moved to the University of Göttingen , where he was rector in 1930/31 .

After the handover of power to the National Socialists , he signed the professors' declaration of Adolf Hitler at the German universities and colleges in November 1933. In 1935, not least because of his membership of the German Christians , he became Adolf Deißmann's successor to the professorship for the New Testament and older church and dogma history at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin . Member of the NSDAP since 1937 , he was dismissed by the military government after the war ended in 1945.
