Abbot Johannes Eckert (St. Bonifaz, Munich)

Johannes Eckert OSB (born March 23, 1969 in Mosbach ; actually Claudius Josef Eckert ) has been abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Bonifaz in Munich and Andechs since 2003 .

Life

Claudius Eckert studied after high school and community service at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich Catholic theology . In autumn 1993 he entered the Andechs monastery and chose the religious name Johannes . In 1999 Johannes Eckert became the subject of a thesis: Serving instead of ruling. Corporate culture and religious spirituality: encounters, challenges, suggestions for a doctorate in Catholic theology. In this work he compares the corporate culture at BMW , where he worked as a student trainee , with the religious spirituality of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation .

On June 10, 2000, Johannes Eckert was ordained a priest in Andechs by the then Bishop of Augsburg , Viktor Josef Dammertz OSB . Until 2002 he was chaplain of the parishes of St. Vitus (Erling - Andechs) and St. Johann Baptist ( Machtlfing ), where he became pastor on December 1, 2002.

On July 23, 2003, Johannes Eckert was elected abbot with a term of twelve years by the voting monks of the convent of the monasteries of St. Boniface and Andechs. He succeeded Odilo Lechner , who had resigned for reasons of age. In doing so, he asserted himself against Anselm Bilgri , the then Prior and Cellerar von Andechs, who was better known to the public . After his election as abbot, disputes arose over the management of the business operations in and around Andechs Monastery. As a result, Bilgri asked for a sabbatical year , from which he did not return to the monastery. On February 10, 2015, Eckert was confirmed as abbot for a further twelve years.

Johannes Eckert is the first Andechs monk to be elected abbot since secularization in 1803. His motto as abbot is Diligere ex toto corde (translated to love with all your heart ).

In 2009 Eckert was elected by the General Chapter of the Bavarian Benedictine Congregation to be one of the two consiliar abbots of Abbot President Barnabas Bögle .

Johannes Eckert is an honorary member of the KDStV Tuiskonia Munich in the CV and the KBSt.V. Rhaetia Munich and the K.St.V. Ottonia in the cartel association in Munich.
