Johannes Eckert (parasitologist)
Johannes Eckert (born May 14, 1931 ) is a Swiss parasitologist . Eckert dealt with parasitic diseases of animals and humans. He moved echinococcosis and other zoonoses into the center of his research .
life and work
Eckert studied veterinary medicine at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover from 1951 to 1956 . In 1958 he received his doctorate and in 1967 he completed his habilitation there. In 1967 and 1968 he worked as a visiting scientist at the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda , Maryland, USA. From 1968 to 1997 he worked as a professor of parasitology at the veterinary and medical faculty of the University of Zurich in Switzerland.
From 1991 to 1997 he headed the WHO Collaborating Center for Parasitic Zoonoses at the Institute for Parasitology at the University of Zurich.
Eckert worked in the field of parasitic zoonoses, especially on the epidemiology, diagnosis and chemotherapy of alveolar echinococcosis in humans. Among other things, he developed chemotherapy against this echinococcosis disease, which used to be fatal in humans. He participated in the development of international guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment and control of this zoonosis.
Johannes Eckert is co-author of the book "Parasitology Textbook for Veterinary Medicine".
Eckert has received numerous scientific awards. In 1988 he became a member, was a member of the Presidium from 1999 to 2004 and received the Merit Medal of the German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina in 2007 . In 1991 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover and in 1996 he was awarded the Rudolf Leuckart Medal of the German Society for Parasitology (DGP).
