Johannes Feige is self-taught . Among his teachers were Carl Michel, whose painting and drawing school he attended from 1962, and the Gersdorf artist Heinz Tetzner . In both of them he discovered the possibilities of expressive design that had a lasting impact on his further work. Feige maintained close artistic contacts with Hans Jüchser , Gerhard Altenbourg and Friedrich Press, among others . Since 1960 Johannes Feige has been the head of a painting and drawing circle in Glauchau. Many of his students later studied at the art college in Dresden or at Burg Giebichenstein in Halle (Saale).

In 1968 Johannes Feige was accepted into the Association of Visual Artists of the GDR , although he was self-taught and a professed Christian . In 1973 he had his first personal exhibition in the small gallery in Glauchau. This was followed by a long series of exhibitions of his contemporary works of art, especially in central Germany. From 1978 to 1982 he was appointed as a part-time lecturer in woodcut at the Dresden Art College.

Study trips took him to Central Asia, Siberia, Russia, Armenia, Georgia and a large number of other countries. In 1993 he traveled to Israel, where he symbolically presented works from his work in the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial and in the monastery of St. Catherine on Sinai . Inspired by Ernst Barlach's sketches of Russia , Johannes Feige took his sketch pad with him on all these trips. On the occasion of his 70th birthday, the district of Chemnitzer Land organized an extensive exhibition of his travel sketches in the Sachsenlandhalle in Glauchau.
