Johannes Hartung (* late February 1505 in Miltenberg am Main; † June 16, 1579 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was one of the leading German Graecists and Hebraists in the 16th century alongside Erasmus von Rotterdam and Johannes Reuchlin .

Memorial plaque to Johannes Hartung in the Freiburg Minster

The son of poor parents studied philology and Greek literature in Heidelberg from January 1521 after attending the Latin school in Miltenberg . After several interruptions of his studies and his various teaching activities due to lack of money, he received a lectureship and professorship for the Greek language in Heidelberg in 1537 and a call to the Albertina in Freiburg im Breisgau as a professor of Greek and Hebrew in 1546 . After his death on June 16, 1579, the Senate of the University of Freiburg commissioned a memorial plaque, which was installed in the Freiburg Minster in May 1580 .

In 2008 the state secondary school in his birthplace Miltenberg was renamed Johannes-Hartung-Realschule.
