from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Herold (also Johannes Heroldt ; * around 1550 in Jena ; † on September 8, 1603 in Weimar ) was a German cantor and composer of the Renaissance period .

Life

By 1593 at the latest, Herold became cantor of the Protestant collegiate school in Klagenfurt . In 1594 his six-part, German-language St. Matthew Passion was printed in motet form in Graz ; it is considered to be the main work of Protestant music in Inner Austria in the 16th century. In 1595 he became head of the choir at the parish church of St. Egid after he had already instructed the figural singing . In the same year he married Maria Khaiser from Klagenfurt.

In 1601 he had to give up his position in Klagenfurt because of the Counter Reformation , for which he was compensated with an annual salary. He was first royal court conductor in Altenburg, Thuringia, and moved to Weimar with the court in 1602. He died there on September 8, 1603.

No other works by Herold have survived. Two collections of polyphonic German songs mentioned by Georg Draudius have so far not been found in the library and are probably lost.
