Johannes Jahresig (born March 17, 1747 in Herrnhaag , now Büdingen , † June 26, 1795 in Saint Petersburg ) was a German Mongolist and Mongolian researcher and translator of Tibetan and Mongolian texts.

Life

Johannes Jahresig was born as the son of Johann Gottlieb Jahresig and Anna Barbara geb. Stephan was born on the Herrnhaag near Büdingen. The parents were members of the Moravian Brothers , who had found their home on the Herrnhaag until 1751. After the brothers left for Großhennersdorf in 1751 , Jahrig lived in the local children's institution there until 1752.

On June 9, 1760, Jahrig was accepted into the community in Herrnhut . On June 11, 1766, he was posted to Barby as a printer . On October 13, 1769 he reached Sarepta on the Lower Volga . From 1770, Jahrig made contact with the Kalmyks and learned their language . According to the Herrnhuter, Jahrig ran the indigo printing company that had been transferred to him at a loss. As a result, he was suspended from the conference of elders. In 1773 he was expelled from the congregation. Year old had to leave Sarepta and should be sent to Astrakhan . In 1774 year old Peter Simon Pallas met , who got him a post at the Imperial Academy of Sciences . In April 1780 a visit took him again to Sarepta. In June 1780 he traveled from Saratov to the Chinese border. An order from the Medical College took him from Petersburg to the Chinese border in 1790. In the same year he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In 1795 Johannes died in Saint Petersburg.

Services

Johannes Jahresig learned the Tibetan language and sent translations of the Dalai Lama's letters to the Petersburg Academy of Sciences. He worked on the grammar of the Mongolian languages ​​and in 1792 sent the "Foundations of Tibetan Script and Language Theory" to the Academy as his client. Within two years he was able to present the "Mongolian Letter Research".

He researched and described the customs, history and ethnography of the Mongol tribes of the Kalmyks on the Volga and the Buryats on Lake Baikal .

Yearly explained the contents of an astrological collection of Indian origin. He described Kalmuck healing methods, made translations and excerpts from works in the Tibetan language. The academy received from him samples of the plant and animal kingdom from the steppe and medicinal herbs of the Kalmyks.
