Johannes Jacobus Prins (born October 9, 1814 in Langezwaag ; † May 24, 1898 in Leiden ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian .

Life

Johannes Jacobus was born the son of pastor Isaäc Prins (born February 15, 1781 in Leiden; † February 5, 1879 in Amsterdam) and his wife Martina Johanna van de Moer (born April 15, 1794; † November 28, 1843 in Amsterdam) . After initial training in Alkmaar , in 1822 at the departmental school in Dordrecht , he attended the Latin school in Amsterdam in 1825 and the Athenaeum Illustre Amsterdam in 1830 . Here he had the treatise Specimen Historico-Thel publicly on June 18, 1835 . De Loco defended and in the same year received a gold medal from the theological faculty of the University of Leiden for his interpretation 1. Pet. III: 18-22. In mid-September he moved to the University of Leiden to study theology. Here Nicolaas Christiaan Kist , Johann Clarisse and Wessel Albertus van Hengel were his formative teachers. Since he had already received solid training in Amsterdam, he was admitted to parish service in Middelburg in October 1837.

On January 20, 1838, he received his doctorate in theology with the treatise de locis Evangelistarum, in quibus Jesus Baptismi ritum subiisse traditur in Leiden. On May 6, 1838, he performed a sermon on Deut. XXXI: 8 a parish office in Eemnesbinnen . Three and a half years later, on December 13, 1841, with the sermon of 1 Cor. XVI: 10b a parish in Alkmaar and in 1843 changed to Rotterdam as a pastor . Through some literary work, including in the theological journals and magazines of his time, he had earned an excellent reputation. After he had rejected professorships in Franeker and Leiden, he was appointed on September 10, 1855 by royal decision as professor of theology at the University of Leiden. In Leiden he received the teaching assignment for the New Testament and practical theology. He took over this office on December 7, 1856 with the inaugural address de Institutione Academica, at futurum sacrorum antistitem formandum Aptissima .

Prins also took part in the organizational tasks of the Leiden University and was rector of the Alma Mater in 1866/67 . He resigned this task with the rector's speech de schola et ecclesia, in re Christiana arcte coniunctis nec unquam disiungendis . In 1853 he was a member of the Society of Dutch Literature in Leiden, was a member of the provincial church leadership of South Holland in Brielle, was active in various synods and belonged to the The Hague Society for the Defense of the Christian Religion. From 1871 to 1892 he was director and president of the Leiden children's home for poor orphans. From 1877 he no longer taught practical theology at the Leiden University, as he was released from this task. Instead, he gave lectures on the introduction and criticism of the New Testament and on early Christian literature. On April 25, 1885 he was retired from his professorship by royal resolution and retired on September 15, 1885.

From his marriage in Alkmaar on April 13, 1842, to Christina Johanna Kluppel (* 1816 in Alkmaar; † January 21, 1885 in Leiden), the daughter of the President of the Arrondissements Law Bank in Alkmaar Jan Andries Kluppel (* January 14, 1786 in Alkmaar; † August 16, 1862 ibid) and his first wife Agata Petronella Vonk (born March 31, 1789 in Alkmaar; † February 21, 1821 ibid), have a son and three daughters.
