Johannes Kalisch

Johannes Stanislaus Kalisch (born December 24, 1928 in Königshütte ; † November 5, 2002 in Rostock ) was a German historian and professor at the University of Rostock . His focus was on German-Polish relations and Eastern European history .

Life

After relocating from Upper Silesia in 1945 and taking his school- leaving examination in 1947, Johannes Kalisch completed a three-month course at the school of the Soviet military administration in Königs Wusterhausen . From 1947 to 1952 he studied history, geography, education and German at the University of Leipzig . Between 1948 and 1949 he taught part-time as a new teacher at a high school . In 1952 he passed the state examination for teaching at the upper level. He then worked as a research assistant or senior assistant at the Institute for the History of the USSR (since 1955: Institute for the History of European People's Democracies ) at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig. In 1957 he received his doctorate under Heinrich Sproemberg and Hellmut Kretzschmar .

From 1960 to 1961 Kalisch was entrusted with teaching the history of Poland in Leipzig . In 1961 he became a research assistant at the University of Rostock , where he lectured on the history of the USSR and the European people 's democracies . He was secretary of the basic SED organization at the historical institute there. In February 1969 he became a lecturer in the history of the USSR and the socialist countries at the history section. From 1970 to 1974 he was the full-time deputy chairman of the university union leadership at the University of Rostock. From March 1975 to March 1976 he was studying at the University of Warsaw . In June 1976 he submitted his PhD B to Lothar Elsner , Eberhard Wolfgramm and Wolfgang Ruge . In September 1976 he took on a full professorship for the history of the USSR and the world socialist system at the Wilhelm Pieck University in Rostock, which he held until 1990. In 1990 he became professor for the history of the socialist countries of Europe in Rostock.

From 1959 to 1989 Kalisch was a member of the editorial board of the yearbook for the history of German-Slavic relations and the history of East and Central Europe , which later became the yearbook for the history of the socialist countries of Europe . From 1976 to 1989 he headed the research group on the history of Poland and German-Polish relations. From 1977 to 1979 he was also deputy director for research in Rostock. He published the studies on German-Polish relations (15 issues appeared) and was involved in bilateral and international bodies. Already at the beginning of his scientific career in the 1950s, Kalisch made contact with the Polish historian Marian Malowist in Hanseatic research , especially about Danzig . As secretary of the Historians' Commission GDR - People's Republic of Poland , he shaped the profile of their work and, after the German unification, participated in the German-Polish textbook commission. He tried hard for a mutual reconciliation.
