Johannes Kathe , (born December 22, 1880 in Stolberg (Harz) , † August 25, 1965 in Rostock ) was a German hygienist and bacteriologist .

Live and act

After graduating from high school in Dessau , Johannes Kathe studied medicine at the universities in Heidelberg and Halle (Saale) from 1900 to 1905 , interrupted by one year of military service. In 1905 he received his license to practice medicine and was awarded a Dr. med. PhD. He then worked there as an assistant and completed his habilitation in 1911 in the subject of bacteriology and hygiene with the work Summer Climate and Housing in their Relationship to Infant Mortality . In the autumn of 1911 he was appointed district doctor in Breslau and director of the State Medical Examination Office there. He participated in the First World War as an army hygienist as well as regimental and medical officer. He then returned to Breslau, where he worked until 1945. From 1945 to 1947 he was head of an epidemic laboratory in Silesia . After working at the Robert Koch Institute and as a department head at the German Central Administration for Healthcare in Berlin, he took over the chair for hygiene at the University of Rostock as a full professor in 1949 . In 1957 he retired.

Kathe did research specifically in the field of infectious diseases ( diphtheria , typhus ) and correctly described hepatitis as a viral disease. He made his most important discoveries in the area of ​​studying the causes and development of leptospiroses .

Johannes Kathe has received numerous awards and honors. In 1951 he was awarded the title " Honored Doctor of the People ". In 1953 he received the National Prize of the GDR III. Class. In 1955 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina and a corresponding member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin . In 1960 he received the title of " Outstanding Scientist of the People ". He was an honorary doctor of the University of Rostock and an honorary member of several scientific societies.
