Johannes Klass (also Klaß ) (* 1879 in Reutlingen ; † 1936 in Erfurt ) was a German architect and construction clerk .

Life

Johannes Klass studied architecture at the Technical University of Stuttgart under Theodor Fischer , who called him the philosopher-architect, and his assistant at the time, Paul Bonatz .

Klass initially had an architecture office in Stuttgart. In 1913 he entered the service of the city of Erfurt. As the city's chief building officer and head of the building construction department, under city building officer Ludwig Boegl , he played a key role in the construction process in Erfurt in the years up to his untimely death. He strove to carefully integrate his inner-city buildings into the respective urban context and still make them appear contemporary through modern and original detail design.

In addition, Klass successfully took part in architecture competitions, where he gained international attention in 1922 with his expressionist design for a skyscraper in Berlin on Friedrichstrasse . After that, however, he returned to the traditional and sometimes monumental style of the Stuttgart School . He saw himself primarily as an artist, which was also expressed in his poems, and was not free from a certain pathos.

Johannes-Klaß-Strasse in the Ringelberg settlement in Erfurt is named after Johannes Klass .
