Johannes Kopp (Pallottine)

Johannes Kopp SAC (born December 9, 1927 in Allmendingen , † June 22, 2016 in Limburg ), also known under the name Ho-un-Ken Roshi, was a German Pallottine priest and Zen master of the Sanbo-Kyodan lineage.

Life

Johannes Kopp went through technical and acting training. He then graduated from the Pallottine School for Late Workers in Limburg. In 1957 he passed the Abitur there. Then he entered the novitiate of the Pallottines and studied at the Theological College of the Pallottines in Vallendar-Schoenstatt . In 1963 he was ordained a priest. After that he was a pastor and religion teacher in Limburg and Trier . In 1969 his order sent him to Mülheim an der Ruhr in the diocese of Essen .

During trips to Japan, the tradition of Zen meditation opened up for Father Kopp. He decided to train as a Zen teacher. In 1985 he was qualified as a Zen teacher through Koun Yamada Roshi. In 2006 Yamada Ryon Roshi, the successor of Yamada Koun Roshi, appointed him "Associate Zen Master" of the Sanbo-Kyodan of Kamakura.

Father Kopp founded the program “Living from within - Zen Contemplation in the Diocese of Essen”. Since 2014 it has been continued by his brother Paul Rheinbay SAC.

Together with Hugo Makibi Enomiya-Lassalle and Willigis Jäger, Johannes Kopp became one of the pioneers of the encounter between Zen Buddhism and Christianity in Germany and belonged to the first generation of Christian Zen teachers in Europe. (See Christian Buddhist Dialogue .)
