Johannes Masing (born January 9, 1959 in Wiesbaden ) is a German legal scholar and former judge of the Federal Constitutional Court .

Life

After studying language for one semester at the University of Stendhal (University of Grenoble 3) in 1979, Masing studied law and philosophy at the University of Freiburg and piano at the music academies in Freiburg and Stuttgart . Since 1981 Masing has received funding from the Cusanuswerk . He passed his two state law exams in 1985 and 1989. Masing then worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Public Law at the University of Freiburg and as a freelancer in a law firm. From 1992 to 1996 he worked as a research assistant at the Federal Constitutional Court at the judge of the Federal Constitutional Court Ernst-Wolfgang Böckenförde . He then did his doctorate in the same year at the University of Freiburg on the influence of European law on national administrative law ; In 1997 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on parliamentary investigations into private matters. After substituting professorships at the Universities of Bielefeld and Heidelberg , he accepted a position at the University of Augsburg in 1998 , where he held the professorship for constitutional and administrative law until the 2006/2007 winter semester. In the 2007 summer semester, Masing accepted a position at the University of Freiburg.

Johannes Masing is married and has two children.

Activity at the constitutional court

At the suggestion of the SPD , Masing was elected by the Federal Council as judge in the First Senate of the Federal Constitutional Court on February 15, 2008 . He took up his post on April 2, 2008 as the successor to Wolfgang Hoffmann-Riem and was responsible for proceedings on freedom of the press , the right to demonstrate and data protection . His term of office should officially end on April 1, 2020. Since his successor, Ines Härtel , was only elected by the Federal Council on July 3, 2020, Masing remained in office until her appointment on July 10, 2020.

Research priorities

Masing's research interests as a scientist are constitutional law , migration law, constitutional history and economic administration law .

Honors

Masing received the Gay Lussac Humboldt Prize in 2008 .

At the end of his judicial activity at the Federal Constitutional Court he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit with Star and Shoulder Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany .
