history
The University of Stendhal was founded as a state university in 1970 on the basis of a law brought in by the then Education Minister Edgar Faure and the campus was built in Saint-Martin-d'Hères in the Isère department . Predecessor institutions can be traced back to the year 1339.
The main areas of training are foreign languages, old and new literature, linguistics and journalism. The focus is on teacher training. Recently, students are also being trained for careers in the fields of culture, communication or journalism. Every year more than 1000 students are prepared for the study requirements specific to France under various exchange programs through the CUEF (University Center for French Studies).
In 2016 the University of Stendhal Grenoble III was merged with the other two universities to form the Université Grenoble Alpes.
