Paul Spangenberg

Paul Gottlieb Theodor Friederich Spangenberg (born July 26, 1843 in Güstrow , † July 22, 1918 in Berlin ) was a German painter .

Life

Paul Spangenberg was the eldest son and one of seven children of the lawyer Fedor Spangenberg and his wife Emma, ​​nee. Diederichs (* 1820). He grew up in Güstrow, Schwerin and Rostock , attended the large city school in Rostock and passed his Abitur there at Easter 1863.

Spangenberg was a student of Professor Carl Steffeck at the Berlin Academy . From 1867 he continued his studies with Gustav Stever in Düsseldorf before traveling to Paris , Spain and Italy for a year . He settled in Berlin in 1876, where he worked as a portrait painter and since 1894 as a professor. His portraits of women were popular because of their skilful arrangements and the “brilliant coloristic treatment of the material”. His role models included Diego Velázquez and Frans Hals , "in whose spirit he created whole figures and knees, ideally of noble ladies in rich toilets."

He married Marie Emilie (née Lasius, 1845–1912) in Berlin on October 27, 1875. With her he had a daughter, Eva Karoline Emilia Laura, born in Berlin on September 19, 1876. Most of his works were in the museums in Güstrow, Rostock and Schwerin.
