Research and Teaching

Basic research

The studies on the hemodynamics of heart valves and heart valve substitutes play an important role in the research activities, in more recent times especially with regard to the questions on the hemodynamic properties of catheter-supported implantable heart valves (TAVI), including the further development of a self-developed and patented non-biological heart valve, which can be implanted with the aid of a catheter. A current focus is on studies of the behavior of TAVI as a valve in valve in conventionally surgically implanted stented biological aortic valves or annuloplasty rings.

clinical research

A new method for minimally invasive, anatomical reconstruction of mitral valves on the beating heart is currently being researched, for which a patent has also been applied for.

Health Services Research and Medicine of Aging

Based on a bi-center study that was funded by DFG funds (Al-562 / 4-1) and in which the effects of psychological and pastoral support for patients who had to undergo heart surgery were analyzed, the working group " Frailty ”with questions about the recording and quantification of the degree of frailty and the detection of biomarkers, which can serve as predictors for assessing the individual surgical risk. To improve the vascular health in non-metropolitan regions, to which the predominantly rural Brandenburg belongs, a state-wide aortic register is currently being set up. Funds have been made available for both projects by the Brandenburg Ministry of Science, Research and Culture (MWFK). Albes is currently working on improving the data on endocarditis in Brandenburg.

Since 2016 Albes has been the scientific coordinator (spokesman) of the joint research project: "Cardiovascular health in non-metropolitan regions of Brandenburg", which is funded by the MWFK within the framework of the Brandenburg Health Campus with € 2.49 million from March 2017 for 2 years.
