Johannes Otto (clergyman)

Johannes Otto (* in Stettin ; † August 1545 ) was a German lawyer, clergyman and university professor at the time of the Reformation in Pomerania .

Life

Johannes Otto was the nephew of the cantor of the same name at the Marienstift in Stettin. In 1499 he was enrolled at the University of Greifswald , 1506 at the Brandenburg University of Frankfurt and in 1513 at the University of Rostock . 1515 he was selected by Henry Mulert in Greifswald for Doctor of Laws PhD . In the same year he was a thesaurary at the Stettiner Marienstift. In 1517 he was ordained a subdeacon . He was a lecturer in civil law at the University of Greifswald and was released from his residence obligation as a priest to study law . In 1518 he was a member of the councilors of the university and in 1519 he became its rector.

In 1520 he left the University of Greifswald for some time and became a deputy deputy at St. Nikolai Church in Stralsund . According to Christian Ketelhot , he is said to have had an illegitimate child at that time. He returned to Greifswald, where he was rector again in 1524/25. From 1529 to 1531 he had a vicarie in Reinberg . In 1533 he was appointed coadjutor and successor to the parish priest of Sagard . From 1534 he was beneficiary in Horst and vicar at St. Nikolai Cathedral in Greifswald. In 1535 and 1536 he was canon at the collegiate monastery of St. Nikolai. During this time he bought a house in Greifswald from the Sagard pastor, which he later bequeathed to his maid and her children. From 1536 to 1539 he was general official of the Bishop of Cammin in Greifswald.

1539 was installed as pastor at the St. Michael Church in Sagard. In the same year he switched to Lutheran teaching and in autumn returned to the newly opened Greifswald University as a professor of civil law. In 1543 he became its rector for the third time.

His son Joachim was matriculated in Greifswald in 1547.
