Johannes Tanner, 6th Mayor of Appenzell Ausserrhoden 1636–1660.

Johannes Tanner (born January 22, 1594 in Herisau ; † around 1665 ; entitled to live in Herisau) was a Landammann and delegate from the Swiss canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Johannes Tanner was a son of Laurenz Tanner, tanner and governor, and Verena Frischknecht. In 1622 he married Elisabeth Schiess, widowed Merz, daughter of Jos Schiess, landlord and mayor of Herisau. Tanner was probably the host. He also knew from 1,629 to 1,635 employments as a church administrator and village clerk in Herisau. From 1630 to 1636 he was governor of Ausserrhoder. From 1636 to 1660 he officiated as Landammann and from 1636 to 1657 he was member of the Diet 39 times. In 1647 and 1648 he was one of the sponsors of a church building in Schwellbrunn . During his reign, the disputes between the two parts of Ausserrhoder behind the Sitter and in front of the Sitter (Sitter barrier) over the occupation of the state offices fell. These were settled in 1647 with the so-called Kehrordnung and a double government (double regiment). Tanner had turned to Zurich with a request for mediation help , where he obviously had good contacts. In the dispute over the church building in the community of Kurzenberg from 1650 to 1652 he campaigned for a single church in Wolfhalden . He fought against the collapse of the church until his death. At the request of Zurich in 1653 he dispatched a contingent of Appenzell troops against the peasant uprising in Entlebuch . This triggered some violent protests among the people. Massive resistance to the innovations he represented in the church order, the marriage statutes and in the land register made Tanner waive his re-election as Landammann in 1660. Although he stayed away from the Landsgemeinde , they elected him again, but then entrusted his son Johannes Tanner with the office.
